Cheap and reliable website hosting?

I’m looking into starting a website for my university’s rowing team. I don’t need anything fancy or with many features. Are there any suggestions for a good host? Thanks!

Cheap and reliable are mutually exclusive in web hosting. Low-cost and reliable is more likely. It all depends on the amount of traffice you expect to get, and what you plan to host. If it’s just basic text and pictures, most hosting services will do nicely. If it’s going to be more of a watching video, downloading pictures, etc.. kind of site, you’ll need more bandwidth and reliability.

I’ve used some real low-dollar (like $5 a year) hosting without problems, and I’ve had some $125 a year packages that went down constantly. Customer service is the biggest issue – you need to be able to get ON THE PHONE with someone if the site goes down. Waiting for email support tickets for days while your site is down is frustrating.

As far as features go, most hosting packages these days are similarly priced for similar add-ons.

You might want to consider asking the IT department at the university if they will allow you to host the site on their equipment. They usually have a few T1 connections and can probably spare the bandwidth, plus the support is right there. Just a thought.

Hope that helps,
Jason

I’ve been pretty happy with Hostica hosting (www.hostica.com) I pay like $12/mo. for a lot of storage and great features. And domain registrations through them are pretty cheap too.

Another cheap one that I’ve heard good things about is godaddy.com

    Hope that helps!

If your looking for an afforadable, reliable hosting company I’d recommend SpaceNet-Media. They have a few different plans to choose from, and I’ve found their support to be superb over the past few years.
